Golden Ear Fountain

The fountain "Golden Ear" is considered the most spectacular fountain of VDNH. The total height of the fountain is 16 meters. The water jets reach a height of 25 meters (this is just below the 9-storey building): it looks especially impressive in windy weather, when the fountain is wrapped in a water plume. At first, it was made of copper – this decided its fate, the metal darkened and collapsed from contact with water. The "miracle" of engineering thought worked for only a few years and it was disassembled. The new " Ear " appeared before the residents of the capital in 1954. The fountain looked like gold, although in fact, it is made of reinforced concrete and decorated with a mosaic of smalt. Thanks to her, the fountain played in a completely separate way in the sun and did not" fade " in cloudy weather. On the base, decorated with gray granite, huge cornucopias with vegetables and fruits were installed, covered with multicolored smalt. The water jets of the fountain, flying out of the golden grains, depicted the characteristic "whiskers" of the ear. In the late 80s, the fountain was turned off and did not work for 30 years. Not so long ago, it was re-launched after a comprehensive restoration. The compositions returned to the appearance of the times of 1954: the fountain was decorated with gold smalt made of colored glass and all the internal structures were updated. The Golden Ear has repeatedly become a part of light shows. Nowadays, the fountain is not only a landmark of VDNH, but also one of the most famous and impressive fountains in Moscow. He managed to earn the true love of the citizens: even in the years when he did not work, Muscovites still came to see him - as a sculpture and an amazing monument of a bygone era.
